The SubRip (.srt) file format makes it easy to manage subtitles. Bring in plain text as subtitles, with blank lines indicating where they end.

To use Underworld to its fullest, choose a video to show along with the editor. The subtitles will be shown on top of it automatically. If the video can be played in QuickTime, it can also be played in Underworld.

In the timeline view, you can use simple gestures to resize and rearrange subtitles. When you drag the edges of a subtitle, they automatically snap to the timeline cursor and to other subtitles that are 2 empty frames away. You can use quick menu commands to set the start or end of the currently selected subtitle to where the timeline cursor is, which is in sync with the video being played.

With manual text input, the table view lets you easily control all the attributes of a subtitle. When editing a subtitle’s text, you can split it into two subtitles based on where the text cursor is. The lengths of the two subtitles are automatically calculated.

I made Underworld because I was looking for an app like it when making subtitles for my videos, but I couldn’t find one that was easy to use, cheap, and up to date. Create something new if you have an idea for it. Feature, or if you find a problem, I’d love to hear about it on the site.
